How to Overcome Those Negative Thoughts
All of us are human, and as such, fall prey to negative thinking from time to time. Negative thoughts bring our energy down and keep us from being in the present moment. They can bring pain to ourselves and those around us.
The more we allow ourselves to have negative thoughts, the stronger they become. Trying to shift our thoughts to positive ones once they’ve started is easier said then done. But it is important to do, especially if we want to minimize the effects of those negative thoughts.
Here are some tips to help you overcome negative thinking:
Surround Yourself with Positive People –
Hang around people who are positive and can help you keep things in perspective. …People who won’t allow you to wallow in your misery.
Read Positive Books or Listen to Positive Recordings –
You can change who you are by changing what you put into your mind. When you change the way you think, you change the way you feel, and your life changes as well.
Pray or Meditate –
This will help you let go of the “what if’s” and “could be’s” by helping you stay in the present. Now is the most important time, and is where you need to keep your focus.
Take Responsibility for Your Life, and Your Business –
You are the only one who can make a change in your life. Make it happen for yourself. Don’t let anyone else or anything else determine where you are going and how you are going to feel.
Help someone –
Doing something nice for another person takes your focus off yourself and your negative thinking. Helping others can also make your problems seem insignificant. Many times when given the option of keeping their own problems or taking on someone else’s, people find that their own problems are not that bad.
Let Yourself and Others Off the Hook –
Let go of anything that you may have done in the past. Today is the only day that is important. Let it go and move forward. Let go of any grudges you have against anyone else as well. Remember, no one is perfect and they did the best they could with what they had at the time.
It is impossible to feel sad or worried while singing an upbeat, happy or funny song. Belt it out and get your energy moving.
Start a Gratitude Journal –
Being grateful helps appreciate what you already have. If you acknowledge your present blessings, your resultant gratitude will diminish the magnitude of present cares and negative thoughts. The more you appreciate something, the more of it you will receive.
Practicing positive self-talk will improve your outlook. When your state of mind is generally optimistic, you’re able to handle everyday stress in a more constructive way. That ability is what will contribute to the widely observed health benefits of positive thinking, will help you achieve success, and will help you be happier along the way.

p.s. If you generally tend to have a negative outlook, don’t expect to become an optimist overnight. But with practice, eventually your self-talk will contain less self-criticism and more self-acceptance. You may also become less critical of the world around you. Plus, when you share your positive mood and positive experience, both you and those around you enjoy an emotional boost.
